Europe’s Summer Splendor – Without the Crowds- Travel Leaders Travel Column May 2008
London, Paris, Rome – these fabulous European cities are perennial favorites for summer vacation travel. However, if you want to avoid the crowds this summer, consider some alternate, but equally fascinating, destinations.
Lisbon, Portugal, is a European capital – but, it is smaller than most and easy to navigate. Like Rome, the city is built on seven scenic hills. Distinctive neighborhoods range from the cobbled streets of historic Alfama to the sleek cafés and shops of Chiados. The city has a wealth of historical buildings, monuments and museums that are within strolling distance of each other.
Budapest, Hungary, began as two separate cities – Buda and Pest – one on each side of the Danube River. Buda is known for its hills and Pest for its level, wide boulevards. Enjoy the city’s elegant coffeehouses, ancient hot springs, Castle District, State Opera House and National Museum. In contrast to the beauty of Budapest’s setting and historic buildings are stark reminders of its dictatorial past, including the Terror Haza, a museum that was once the headquarters of the State Security Police.
Istanbul, Turkey, is the world’s only metropolis located on two continents, Europe and Asia, divided by the waters of the Bosphorus. Shaped by Islamic, Christian and Jewish traditions, Istanbul has been a cultural and ethnic melting pot for centuries. The city’s tradition of diversity shows in its many historic buildings, which include examples of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. There are museums, parks and shops to explore, and lots of modern bars, restaurants and clubs for relaxation.
If you would rather completely escape the cities of Europe in favor of an unspoiled landscape of mountains, valley, lakes and streams, consider venturing north to Sweden. Major attractions include Abisko National Park, which has stunning vistas and endless hiking trails across 18,500 acres.
You may even find that straying slightly off the beaten path of European tourism will be kind to your vacation budget!
